Amazing visuals combined with a rich story lead to The New Order being the reboot that the series needed, particularly after the lukewarm outing. Insomniac's Resistance trilogy peaked with its first entry, perhaps explaining the franchise's short lifespan. The PS3's best launch title , Resistance: Fall of Man matches tight first-person shooter mechanics with an ambitious storyline that guides players across a devasted United Kingdom.
Along with a solid multiplayer, Resistance: Fall of Man 's single-player campaign is fantastic. Packed with memorable set pieces and enemies that are at least somewhat competent, Insomniac put together a great shooter that makes every second of its story count.
Even in , this game is well worth playing. The best place to start this series is with the original entry. While Columbia is breathtaking at times in BioShock: Infinite , there is just something both horrifying yet enchanting when experiencing the underwater city of Rapture for the first time. Everything looks beautiful, but the player knows that something is not right in the city. Mixing superpowers and gunplay together, BioShock is an amazing start to the series that keeps players engaged from beginning to end.
The mystery, the look of the world, and the gameplay mix so well to create an unforgettable experience. Despite its sequel adding some RPG elements and extra side content, 's Shadow Warrior has comfortably the more substantial main campaign. A reboot of the classic shooter, Flying Wild Hog's release combines an acquired sense of humor with satisfying melee combat and a respectable arsenal of weapons to create a fun throwback to old-school shooters.
An argument can certainly be made that Shadow Warrior overstays its welcome. However, sometimes nothing hits the spot like slashing demons in half with a katana or reducing them to mush while dual-wielding submachine guns. Valve's genre-defining first-person shooter set a benchmark in gaming that few have been able to surpass. Half-Life 2 's road trip-esque structure and persistent desire to evolve keeps the game constantly feeling fresh, even if the gameplay cannot be seen as anything more than decent in this day and age.
Half-Life 2 is considered a classic for a reason. These spy shooters have aged quite well since they combine solid gunplay with fun gadgets, memorable soundtracks, and engaging storylines packed with unforgettable characters, particularly the charming lead, Cate Archer. Taking everything that made the first game so great, the sequel cranks them all up to eleven and adds new aspects that make Rise Of The Tomb Raider a superior sequel. Lara's story continues to be fleshed out with more development to her as a character and a plot that's equally as intriguing as it was in the first game.
Combine that with an open world, plenty of stealth and action gameplay that never feels dull, and plenty of new upgrades and side missions to enjoy, it is easily one of the best Tomb Raider games ever made. For any gamer who just wants to blast their way through the armies of Hell, use a variety of guns with different mods for them, and see it all from the perspective of a very angry immortal warrior, then Doom Eternal is for you.
Much like with Turok 2 , it's not the deepest plot-wise, but there is a lot of fun lore to find via codexes and logs. However, that doesn't stop the game from being a fun, addictive carnage candy factory with tons of replayability that can turn the hours of gameplay into hours. With franchises like Dead Island , Call of Juarez , and Dying Light , Techland has firmly cemented itself as a respectable name in the shooter genre. Chrome was quite a unique game when it first released since it favored open levels over corridors and prioritized precision in its gunplay.
Although Techland's game has aged quite a bit over the years, Chrome is still impressive almost two decades following its debut. Naughty Dog's Uncharted franchise presents globetrotting adventures reminiscent of the likes of Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider.
Just as well, Disco Elysium is an RPG without the traditional combat, instead focussing on a lot of dialogue between characters. Disco Elysium eschews traditional RPG gameplay and instead boils everything down into 24 skills across four abilities: Intellect, Psyche, Physique and Motorics. These skills can be approved upon through levelling up. Nothing is black and white though; every skill has a negative side-effect if you level it up too much.
It may not be the most cheerful game to appear on this list, but at fourth place it is definitely one of the best. The second of three first-party Microsoft games is the latest story in the Master Chief saga. And it marked a true return to form.
The free-to-play multiplayer reminded us of how good a Halo shooter can be, and that campaign elevated it to new levels. Halo Infinite marked a paradigm shift for the franchise, introducing an open-world for Master Chief to explore. Landing on a new Halo ring felt old-school and revolutionary at the same time. The multiplayer also made a return to form with the vast majority of the guns feeling the best they ever have.
The classic assault rifle packs a real punch, battle rifle and pistols still feel immense and even the new weapons offer something up. The first time you hit a warthog with a skewer is a special moment, and the multiplayer is full of these memorable moments.
Still, It Takes Two is in second place and very deserving of that position. Initially an unhappy tale, you control a married couple on the verge of divorce.
Their daughter Rose takes their doll lookalikes into the shed and cries. As tears drop on the dolls, her mum and dad are transported into the spirits of the dolls and they must work together to free themselves. Players must learn to work together to progress through these levels. No two levels are the same as It Takes Two takes inspiration from all forms of videogame genres. It keeps things fresh and fun but also exciting and at times emotional. There may not be a dry eye left in the house when the credits roll, but you will appreciate the journey all the more so.
It is our usual go-to gaming series when playing a gaming session where the majority of us will regularly bail out one of us who invariably finishes last when racing online. If you want to see the name of who that is, check the name at the top of our Forza Horizon 5 review.
Not sure why we entrusted the worst driver on the team to review the game…. Anyways, back on topic: Forza Horizon 5 is our game of the year! It came as a bit of a surprise to many having only been announced during E3 and releasing just a few months afterwards.
This time around, the Horizon Festival moves on to Mexico with the most diverse map the series has ever seen. And in terms of x-axis and y-axis, it is also the biggest and highest map in the Horizon series. The beauty of Forza Horizon 5 is that at launch it came with almost all of the features that had been implemented in the previous games.
And then dumps a whole load more on top. In Forza Horizon 5, almost every action you perform feeds into the new Accolades system, which is the main way to unlock new races in Forza Horizon 5. You can build up the festival how you would like; if you prefer one certain type of event you can access all these first by levelling up that part of the festival.
But all the favourites return as well: a huge roster of cars, ample radio stations and just tons and tons of fun. Shoutout as well to playing on Xbox Series X where the graphics on this game just look truly stunning.

Bring on Gears 6! The original Gears made our list of the best Xbox exclusives of all time. This collection of six Halo games stands tall for the campaigns alone — particularly the completely remastered Halo 2 Anniversary — but now that developer has updated the once-maligned multiplayer suite along with new features, enhancements, and an overall level of polish, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is an absolute must-own that just keeps getting better year after year.
This is the quintessential Halo experience that has finally fulfilled all of its massive potential. If you're a longtime fan of the Halo universe or a newcomer who has no idea where to start in the long saga of the Master Chief, you can't do better than this. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice offers an exhilarating dose of what FromSoftware does best with new, skill-heavy combat systems that require precision and perfection to master.
Its specific brand of action may not be for everyone, but those who stick it out will find Sekiro to be an immensely rewarding journey. FromSoftware's next game is the highly anticipated Elden Ring , out February We define a 10 out of 10 as a "masterpiece," and Inside is every bit of one.
The non-sequel follow-up to the sublime Limbo took six years to make, and it looks like five of those were spent on polish. Every pixel, animation, ray of light, and audio cue feels considered — not to mention the puzzles themselves.
Inside won't strain your brain too hard, but its impactful non-verbal story will leave you contemplating what it all means for days after you finish it.
Inside is simply unforgettable and should not be missed. Is it a nice looking game with a whimsical, fairy-tale tone and graphics to match? Yes, most certainly. But you need to play It Takes Two with a friend or loved one either on the couch or via online play, of course, since It Takes Two cannot be played alone because it is simply one of the best and most unique multiplayer experiences you can find these days. Play it and we promise you'll smile.
Remedy, meanwhile, is working on several new projects, including a Control multiplayer game, the long-awaited Alan Wake 2 , and a free-to-play co-op shooter codenamed Vanguard. Agent 47's latest and for now, last outing is not only a much better game than its two predecessors, it's a much prettier one too. Hitman 3 has some truly breathtaking scenes from an eye-candy perspective.
The first mission in Dubai will get you hooked, but the remaining five — including the second one, which is essentially like a playable version of the fantastic film Knives Out — will keep your Xbox powered on for hours as you try out the myriad ways to take out your targets. This is the best Hitman since Blood Money.
IO's plans for Hitman 3 in include new maps, new storylines, and new modes. Its entire gameplay loop is built around you being a badass — complete with other characters you encounter in the game being very, very aware of your badassery — but Eternal meets you in the middle by throwing literally dozens of demons at you at a time to even the odds.
As the enemies get bigger and nastier during the campaign, you get faster, smarter, and more powerful too. Assassin's Creed has essentially evolved from a stealth action-adventure to a full-blown open-world RPG, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla is perhaps the best example of its modern form yet. You'll never be lacking in things to do within its Norse-Viking world, and when you do get into combat, it's as weighty and brutal as it's ever been.
What's more, if you've never played an Assassin's Creed game before, you can jump right into this one, as even though there's a larger universe at play here, there's no pre-required knowledge that will stop you from thoroughly enjoying your time here. Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok is the game's next major expansion.
Both a stunning technical achievement and a new gold standard for video game storytelling in an open-world setting, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best games Rockstar has ever made, and one of the greatest games ever, period. While its story is a complex tale of honor, loyalty, and loss woven around rich characters brought to life by nuanced performances, the real star of Red Dead 2 is its world. Its massive open-world areas impress, in terms of both scope and density.
Each massive area is generously dotted with great monsters to slay, tantalizing mysteries to solve, and personal stories to unfurl.
A next-gen version of The Witcher 3 is scheduled for Q2 Netflix's The Witcher: Season 2 , meanwhile, is now streaming. Dre composed new music for the game and will be featured as a character. Shifted: Titanfall 2 No.
