Even when you do get the robes, you'll probably still use Ghost Armor or Shield, you don't really get mage wearable armor that's better than spell armor in BG. The magic resistance when combined with the Cloak of Balduran is nice though. Note that enhancement bonuses don't stack with Rings of Protection. Yes, pnp 2e rules said you only got the best bonus out of magical armour and "x of protection" items, BG implemented this by simply stopping you wearing them at the same time.
