Get ready to feel that sense of shock for two and a half hours. Caligula's a simple kind of emperor-- he's in love with his sister and consummates that love regularly , he likes to give young married couples a very special kind of gift, he makes his horse a Senator, and he eventually declares himself a god.

This movie was a big deal when it was first released, because it was produced by Bob Guccione and Penthouse Films, who promised to make a totally realistic film about this topic-- so you can guess what kind of content the movie's got in it. And you'd be right, there's a lot of sex going on. But most of it is deviant, sick, wrong, wrong, wrong sex, so it's not much of a turn-on. It's a brutal, hard-core, no-holds-barred look at Roman times.

How historically accurate is it? I don't know. But it is from a screenplay by noted historian Gore Vidal who also wrote Ben-Hur , so my guess is that it's at least pretty close. So drink your coffee before and perhaps while you watch it, and make sure that your more squeamish friends are either at home, or tied to a chair with their eyes pried open Clockwork Orange- style.

Yes, there are naked boobies everywhere. Yes, there are vaginas aplenty. There are also lots of penises and nude men. There is hardcore sex, and some masturbation, by members of both sexes. Often it's got to do with the plot, and often it's just going on in the background, while the other characters have an unrelated conversation. The violence is pretty harsh, too-- there's lots of blood, gaping wounds, decapitations Is it any good, though?

I must say, I enjoyed it. I found it interesting to see a movie like this-- not exactly porn, but way too hardcore to ever be mainstream.
